From Israel to Portugal: Shimon & Shikma’s Journey to a New Life on the Silver Coast

Moving to a new country is always an adventure—full of excitement, challenges, and unexpected surprises. For Shimon and Shikma, leaving Israel behind and starting a new life on Portugal’s Silver Coast was a dream they decided to turn into reality.

But what motivated them to take the leap? What challenges did they face? And, most importantly—would they do it all over again?

In a recent episode of Portugal – The Simple Life Podcast, the couple shared their personal journey, including the cultural shocks, home-buying process, and the simple joys of everyday life in Portugal.

Why Portugal? Why the Silver Coast?

Like many foreigners, Shimon and Shikma were drawn to Portugal for its beauty, tranquillity and quality of life. Having travelled extensively, Shimon initially considered Spain or Thailand as relocation options. However, a visit to Portugal changed everything.

“I came to Portugal two years ago for the first time and fell in love from the first moment," Shimon recalls. After exploring beyond the usual tourist hotspots, he discovered São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré—coastal gems that felt like home. He immediately told Shikma, "You have to come and see this for yourself!"

What stood out the most was the calm lifestyle compared to the stress of Israel, a mild climate with easy winters, the stunning coastline just minutes from their future home, and a welcoming community. Their journey quickly evolved from a simple exploration trip to building their dream home in Portugal.

The Home-Buying Process with Portugal Realty

After researching properties online and multiple Zoom calls with our Sales Director Dylan Herholdt, they saw the perfect house plan and knew it was meant for them.

Buying property abroad can be daunting, but Shimon and Shikma took a bold approach—reserving their home before even visiting the land in person.

However, when it came time to sign the contract, the reality of their decision hit. "We looked at each other, started crying—happy tears, nervous tears, everything!" They had just made one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

Despite the initial nerves, Portugal Realty provided support at every stage, from legal paperwork to project management, all of which was included in the Simple Life Home Buyer services. Having a team of property specialists to oversee every step of the process in-house gave them the confidence they needed to proceed.

The challenges of moving to Portugal

The first major learning curve was adjusting to their new pace of life. Coming from Israel’s fast-paced, high-stress environment, adapting to Portugal’s relaxed way of doing things had its challenges.

"In Israel, everything is urgent—now, now, now! Here, people take their time, and at first, it was hard to get used to." Emails take longer to get responses and businesses close for long lunch breaks. But over time, they came to appreciate this slower, more mindful way of living.

Another adjustment was helping their children adapt to a new language. Moving with two young daughters meant a big transition—especially with language barriers. While their older daughter who speaks English quickly made friends and adjusted, the younger one struggled at first. But thanks to patient teachers, a welcoming school environment, and a diverse mix of international students, she is slowly settling in. "It was the scariest part for us as parents, but seeing them happy made everything worth it", explains Shikma.

Feeling at Home in Portugal

Their Portuguese neighbours in this small village of Alcobaça also welcomed them warmly—offering apples from their orchards and helping them settle in. The kindness and generosity of the locals confirmed what many foreigners say: Portugal is not just a place to live, but a place to belong.

Shimon and Shikma have fully embraced Portuguese culture, from enjoying fresh seafood at local restaurants to discovering affordable, high-quality wine... "Every day feels like a new adventure!"

Advice for Others Thinking About Moving to Portugal

Thinking of making the move to Portugal? Their first piece of advice is to visit first and stay for a few weeks to explore different areas.

Research is essential to consider schools, lifestyle, healthcare, and amenities before choosing a location.

Being patient is also key, as adjusting to a new pace of life takes time, but it’s worth it. Finding the right support, such as working with trusted professionals like Portugal Realty, makes the process much smoother.

Despite the challenges, Shimon and Shikma wouldn’t change a thing. They found safety, happiness, and a true sense of home on Portugal’s Silver Coast. "It’s a dream come true. This is the best place to live."
