Description: Set in the middle of Sao Martinho do Porto, this indoor market is far more than meets the eye. The building is small and unassuming but there is a good variety of fruit and vegetables, some imported but most locally farmed. The ladies are friendly and always helpful. In a separate section, they sell freshly caught fish, during the week it is usually limited to one or two counters, with more options on weekends.

Description: Located in Portugal's oldest fishing village, this market is the place to go for fresh fish. However, there are also locally farmed fruits and vegetables. The market is noisy, colourful and vibrant, just like Nazare. Surrounding the open market area are a number of smaller stores selling handcrafted items, from ceramics to baskets to leather and cork products. Located right in the centre of the village there is parking nearby and the building is just a few hundred meters from the beach.

Description: Nestled in the walls of the 16th Century castle, this market makes our list for being truly charming and unique. The walls are lined with both new and second-hand books, tables set up in the middle of the shop provide further literary options in Portuguese and English. The book store shares the space with locally produced, biological products as well as fruit. Find various products from honey, to cereals, teas, and even pumpkin seeds.

Description: Huge, open-air market selling everything you could think of. A bit of a drive, but worth the trip and a good place to spend the morning. There is plenty of parking and loads of stalls, selling clothes, antiques, carpentry, fruit, vegetables, and baked goods. Be sure to have lunch there at one of the rustic grill restaurants, the menu is generally chicken or chicken, but oh what delicious chicken.

Description: Probably the most famous farmers market on the Silver Coast. Located on the picturesque ‘Praca da Fruta’ square in the middle of the historic centre of Caldas da Rainha. Colourful and always busy, the smell of fresh fruit and flowers hangs in the air. The market takes you back in time, where bartering is commonplace and old ladies still use traditional scales to weigh fruit and vegetables and give you an approximate price. Be prepared to leave with more than you need, the local ladies are very sweet and very charming.
